A Dazzling Debut: Five-Book Launch of The Lakeland Mysteries Series Brings Adventure, Intrigue, and Imagination to Young Readers

Wilton Books is pleased to announce that a new literary adventure for children aged 9–12 launches today with the simultaneous release of five gripping titles in The Lakeland Mysteries, a bold and imaginative series by Warren Cabral. Known for his distinguished legal career and theatrical writing, Cabral now turns his pen to children’s fiction, blending mystery, action, and psychological insight in stories that are as visually captivating as they are intellectually engaging.

The series introduces two extraordinary primary school sisters whose powers of observation and telepathic connection lead them into a world of puzzles, peril, and paranormal intrigue. From mass deception to body-snatching aliens, each tale is set against the haunting beauty of the Lake District, evoking a sense of place as vivid as the mysteries themselves.

What Readers Say:

“Move over Enid Blyton! With their telepathic powers and sharp eyes, sleuthing sisters Mae and Isla Donaldson get on the trail of a missing Cumbrian treasure trove. Fast paced, this fun read features bikers The Fells Angels, crooked curators and dodgy detectorists. The mystery unravels in the streets of Cockermouth and only Mae and Isla can figure out the vanishing Fire on Slate Fell!” Katriona Wade, Retired BBC Radio Producer.

“The Fire on Slate Fell is a winner! I really loved it! The clever plot is complex but keeps the elements clear. Given the theme of buried treasure, the story was a bit like a treasure hunt itself with clues along the way to solve the mystery. There are so many great characters as well, painted so colourfully you can see them in your mind.  It added real interest to have characters who turned out to be different from what they seemed. Food for thought for young readers. And the colour and beauty of the Lake District countryside is so vividly described you can really picture it. On top of all that, I loved the unexplained magic and the complexities of the laws governing treasure trove. It’s just great!” Rebecca Brady,            Editor, Writer, mother of two, Bermuda

“With vivid and evocative descriptions echoing another era, The Wolf of Ennerdale is an engaging story. It reminds me of Nancy Drew mysteries but with broader world implications, from diamond mining to cutting-edge technology. The two sisters are wonderfully real and their ability to communicate through their thoughts sparks the imagination. Marvellous descriptions make this story stand out from run of the mill children’s fare.” M. Bredin, Emmy nominated Executive Producer.

A Word from the Author:

“I am often asked where the twists and turns of the plotting come from.  The storylines spring from the book titles, which I conceive first, before I start.  The titles themselves are often taken from pub names I found in a gazetteer. After that, I construct riffs based on elements of the titles and see how far the word association takes me.”

A Word from the Illustrator:

“Illustrating The Lakeland Mysteries is like drawing childhood as it really feels—mud on your boots, mystery in the air, and just enough magic to make you look twice. Warren’s stories give me space to explore character through posture and place. Each drawing is a moment caught between play and peril, where the landscape listens and the children lead.”

Availability

All five titles are available now in print, eBook, and audiobook formats through major retailers and online platforms. The series is ideal for schools, libraries, and families seeking intelligent, beautifully crafted stories that celebrate curiosity, courage, and connection.
